It’s very appropriate to celebrate your 100th birthday with loved ones. But in this story, a nice old lady who was celebrating her 100th birthday was surprised by her garbage collector.
The story of garbage collector Ben Bird’s excellent relationship with his 100-year-old client Dorothy Ballard initially made the headlines in 2019 and quickly gained popularity.
Ben always takes advantage of every opportunity to stop and chat with Dorothy, better known as Mercy, when he visits her at her home in Kidderminster, England. For ten years, he has been performing this.
The mother-of-two, who was 100 years old, said of the father, “He talks about his family, and he tells me about his small kids.”
Dorothy recalled a conversation she once had with Ben. “He told me, ‘We’re going to name her Daisy,’ when his wife gave birth to a small girl. Oh, how incredible, did you realize it was also my mother’s name? What a pleasant surprise. I answered.
Ben claims that Mercy unlocking the door and saying “thank you” to Ben marked the beginning of their friendship. She makes me chuckle and brightens my day every week, he continued.
The love between Ben and Mercy captivated the hearts of millions as they surprised Mercy with a special surprise on her 100th birthday.
The trash man’s most loyal client, Dorothy, had made him a promise that if she lived to be 100, he would bring her a cake on her unique birthday.

So, when Mercy received her letter from the Queen, as all British residents do when they turn 100, Ben arrived to wish Mercy a happy birthday and bring her a cake and candles.
In a social media hit, he walked up to Mercy’s front door, lighted the candles, and sang “Happy Birthday” to her.
Before singing “Happy Birthday to You” with two employees and asking her to make a wish before blowing out her candles, Ben gives the old woman a hug.
Hundreds of individuals commented on the video in the hopes that their friendship would last.
According to one Twitter user, “This gives hope in mankind.”
A different user commented, “Lovely tale, Mercy and Ben, may your friendship last for many years.”
