For those of us who do not fit the stereotypical “ideal” image, the world can look harsh, with complete strangers feeling obligated to criticize someone based on their social media appearance.
Karine de Souza knows this better than anyone. Because of her unusual skin condition, the Brazilian has spent her whole life, even at home, wearing SPF100 sunscreen.
The 33-year-old has Xeroderma Pigmentosum, a condition that increases her chance of developing skin cancer.
She is very susceptible to UV radiation due to her incurable “one-in-a-million” condition since she is unable to repair any skin damage from the sun.
She could get a painful sunburn after just a few minutes in the sun. As a youngster, she was frequently cut off from the outside world since it was dangerous for her to spend too much time away from home.
She mentioned that she does not immediately experience anything when she exposes herself to the light. However, lesions will develop later and, if they are malignant, will need to be removed.
Karine has had 130 surgeries to repair lesions brought on by the sun, resulting in the loss of her bottom lip and a section of her nose.
She must contend with more than simply a physical conflict, though. Karine gets side-eye on the street frequently and has experienced online and in-person verbal abuse.
She remains upbeat and joyous despite her tragedy and has even found love.
Karine’s husband, Edmilson, first connected with her online and was captivated by her bravery and inspiring narrative. Karine has always had Edmilson at her side, and she is aware of his desire to live out the rest of his days with her.
Additionally, he decided to take on Karine’s three children from a previous relationship, which meant a lot to her.

Karine stated that there have already been a number of derogatory remarks calling her a monster, someone who has been deformed, and a zombie.
A few comments suggested that their relationship was phony, Karine was a “sugar mommy,” and she must be extremely affluent.
Karine added that people noticed him because he was young and gorgeous, and they couldn’t believe he was with her because he truly loved her.
